I’m a Girl, I’m Important (Soy niña, soy importante) draws to a close

During the months of July and August we celebrated the fourth edition of “Soy niña, soy importante” (SNSI) or I’m a girl, I’m Important all-girls summer day camp. This year we were able to meet our goal yet again - 250 girls ages 9-12 from Miches had the summer of their lives!

The three camp sessions successfully took place in three different communities - Miches, La Gina and La Mina - thanks to the support and collaboration of hundreds of people - including you!  Our dedicated team of camp counselor volunteers gave a week of their lives to support us with their knowledge, passion and love;  dozens of collaborating entities supplied in-kind donations and support - thanks to The Ocean Foundation, Miss Rizos, Nosotras, BHD León Bank, World Vision, Ondina Sosa, UBrand, Fer Figheras, Pos Soluciones al Punto, Iván de la Cruz, Casa Quién, Fe y Alegría and Metadata; hundreds of cash donations by generous donors and co-workers in the United States and abroad; the girls’ parents who were involved more than ever; the 12-04 School District and principals who lent us their facilities; the Fundación Tropicalia team who devoted many hours to this project over the course of six months; and of course, the campers who never showed up late and inspired us yet again  with their joy and zest for life.

Since its inception, SNSI has had a clear and simple mission - to create a safe, free and fun space where girls can simply be girls. Our campers live in extreme poverty, but at SNSI they escape that reality, and for 40 hours they learn about themselves and their value in society. We aspire to give our campers the tools they need to make timely life choices, to become leaders in their communities, and ultimately contribute to breaking out of their generational poverty cycle.

We believe we are making progress toward that vision, as  over the years we’ve witnessed how many girls have changed the way they perceive themselves and the world; year-to-year they remember what they’ve learned and apply it in their daily lives.
